Department to pay disabled Mamelodi boy

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development will this week pay the liability claim for a Mamelodi boy who suffered brain damage at Pretoria West Hospital.

The seven year old boy who was born at the hospital in March 2004 is suffering from permanent severe brain damage and is quadriplegic.

In April this year, at the Pretoria High Court, the Department and the child’s legal representatives agreed on the settlement of R6.7 million. It was also agreed that a curator would manage the money on her behalf.

The department regrets the length of time it has taken to bring the matter to finality but this was unavoidable because of the legal process that had to run its course.

The department hopes that the payment will assist the family to take care of the medical and other needs of the child.
