The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development would like to assure the people of Gauteng that we are committed to paying monies owed to National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) as well as all other suppliers for services offered to the department.
The department is also working closely with NHLS to ensure that service delivery is not disrupted.
In line with our commitment to ensure the provision of quality health care to the people of Gauteng, efforts have been made to pay the NHLS on a monthly basis. Through negotiations with them, the department has committed to pay NHLS a minimum of R90 million per month.
The department is also working closely with NHLS to ensure that service delivery is not disrupted.
We will make every effort in the light of the cash flow challenges being experienced to honor this commitment.
In December 2011, NHLS received payments of more than R100 million and further payments are being processed and ready to be released to NHLS.
The Head of Department of Health together with members of staff of the department have been meeting with the NHLS on a regular basis.
During these meetings, the two parties are identifying cost containment measures to reduce expenditure on laboratory services.
A technical task team has also been established to ensure that service delivery is not disrupted as well as the rational use of laboratory services and the reduction of laboratory costs.
Through these initiatives, it is evident that the department is commitment in addressing the challenges it faces in the slow payment of service providers and is also determined to use all resources at its disposal in addressing this by June 2012.
We would like to reiterate that the department is fully aware and committed to meeting all its past and future obligations to its suppliers.
