In commemorating women’s month, the Department of Local Government and Housing together with the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality handed over houses to 20 women beneficiaries. This was done in Ga-Rankuwa extension 24, north of Pretoria. The women were all from different age groups.
Of the twenty women, four elderly women were chosen and were handed keys to their houses by the MMC for Housing in The City of Tshwane, Mr Joshua Ngonyama. The other 16 women were given happy letters, that stated that they were owners of the houses and were happy with them.
“The City of Tshwane is working together with the Gauteng Province to ensure better services for all”, MMC Ngonyama said when addressing the women present to receive their houses .He said so far 1527 houses will be completed to house the residents of Ga-Rankuwa extension 24. He also made a promise that the municipality together with the province will install street lights in the area and register the unemployed to receive free 100 meters of water and 100 kws of electricity.
Amongst the women beneficiaries present was the 72 year old Elsie Sibata who was the oldest beneficiary and the happiest of them all. “I have never had a house of my own; I have been staying in a family house for all these years. I’m very happy that from today I have a house of my own”, she said, adding that she has been waiting for a house for a long time and looking forward to the day she will get one. Ms Sibata has never been married and has one child.
