Department of Labour signs a MoU with the Coega Development Corporation to roll-out its services

The Department of Labour’s (DoL) Eastern Cape provincial directorate has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Coega Development Corporation, a partnership that will enable the department’s Port Elizabeth Labour Centre extend its array of services to the people of Motherwell.

In terms of the agreement the department will render the services at Motherwell in the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) of Coega complex for at least one day per week. The department is to second officials from the Port Elizabeth Labour Centre at the Coega-owned building.

The initiative, expected to start operating from July 1 will spare the people of Motherwell the burden of travelling long distance to Port Elizabeth Labour Centre in the central business district.

When the demand increases, the Department of Labour plans to increase the number of officials and the resources as well as the days of visiting into a five working days service.

With the Coega IDZ heavily involved in recruitment of the unemployed people/job seekers in the same area, the department also plans to use the partnership to use its electronic recruitment system, the Employment Services South Africa (ESSA), to avail existing work opportunities to job seekers.

An official launch of the partnership is expected in August.

In another development, the DoL through the CCMA on East London’s Daimler Chrysler (MBSA) has intervened to save an estimated 2000 jobs as a result of a high-tech project undertaken by the company as it prepares for the new C-Class of Mercedes Benz.

The CCMA is facilitating the social plan and DoL Eastern Cape was in the process of intervening through Training Lay-Off Scheme to cushion the blow of jobs under threat.
