Department of Labour shocked

The Department of Labour has learnt with dismay the alleged abuse of the domestic worker by her employer (Domestic worker abused at prison home) as reported in The Star newspaper on 27 September.

The department is committed to ensuring protection of vulnerable workers including domestic workers.

In the article, Ellen Molehane claimed that her employer called her names and pulled her by the ears. She has since quit her job.

“A Sectoral determination which sets employment conditions and wages was promulgated, of which employers are expected to comply with,” said Zondeki Nxawe, the Deputy Director-General: Inspections and Enforcements Services.

“Domestic workers too have a right to fair labour practices and decent work,” she said.

The case has been referred to Labour inspectors for further investigations and if the employer failed to comply with the Sectoral determination, she will be brought to book.
