Department of Labour prohibited some schools in Northern Cape

Department of Labour’s inspectors closed two schools around Kuruman in the Northern Cape Province due to contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.

“The prohibitions were issued during inspections where the two schools were found to be contaminated with asbestos and having bare electrical connections that posed health risk to the learners and educators,” said the Chief Director: Provincial Operations, Monica Lepheane.

A joint meeting was held between the Departments to discuss the issue and it was agreed that the schools need to be fixed within the specified time of the contravention notice. It was also agreed that the Department of Labour will further engage and assist the Department of Education to comply.

“When it comes to health and safety, there is no compromise, hence we suggest that there be assessment of all schools in the province and this can only be achieved when all stakeholders take part,” she concluded.
