Are you a graduate who seeks to earn some honours and be a ‘research boffin’? The Department of Labour’s Public Employment Services (PES) is seeking to appoint and place five unemployed graduates who have never worked before, in an internship programme.
The Department of Labour is facilitating the opportunity to unemployed graduates between the ages of 24 and 35 by placing them with one of South Africa’s premier research institution. The internship is for a period of five months and will start in February 2012.
Prospective “research boffins” will be based in Pretoria, and have until 19 December 2011 to submit their applications to be accepted in the internship programme.
Department of Labour’s PES Technical Support manager, Maxwell Xonti said the department would in the process of recruitment be playing the role of a screening, interview preparation and placement prospective graduates on behalf of the client as part of the work that is performed by PES.
PES is a unit of the Department of Labour that matches the unemployed with prospective employers.
During the internship graduates would be expected to conduct research in a team with other young people; undertake research that leads to the production of a youth driven development model; establish a platform where other young people can contribute to the development of such a model; and develop new concepts of development.
The qualifying criteria is: unemployed graduate, who have never worked before; should have a Master’s degree or a PHD in physical sciences, social sciences and humanities; must be between the ages of 24 and 35 years; have a strong critical and analytical skills; be highly motivated and self-driven; possess basic research skills acquired during studies; be computer literate with working knowledge of how to use the internet; be familiar with social media platforms; demonstrate highly developed people skills; possess ability and enthusiasm to engage as a team player in multidisciplinary research.
Applications should include a detailed CV; a full certified academic transcript/certificates; a letter of motivation as to why you want to participate in the project and also two references and details of your previous lecturers (with telephone, fax and e-mail contact details). Xonti said the initiative presents a unique opportunity for graduates to “leave a trail”. He said those that excel in the programme may get an added bonus of being absorbed and join the labour market.
