Department of Labour pips peers and scoops Best Reporting Award

The Department of Labour, which recently announced that it had posted a clean audit opinion after six years, has been bestowed with another accolade by the South African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) for best reporting in the category for all national departments in 2011.

The Annual Public Sector Reporting Award is in honour of pursuing excellence in Departmental Annual Reports.

Labour Minister Nelisiwe Mildred Oliphant was pleased with the Award saying: “the Department of Labour again sets the trend, and I would like to thank all the officials whose hard work resulted in this award. This and the fact that we received an unqualified audit report, the first one in the last six years points to the changing of fortunes for Labour”.

Professor Dieter Gloeck, executive President of SAIGA said: “Your Department’s performance underscores its commitment to effective and accountable reporting”.

The Award Panel and the Technical Award Committee is constituted from experts in the field of public sector reporting, representatives of the Office of the Accountant General, the office of the Auditor-General, academia and SAIGA.

It is independent from the executive and the financial departments. Additional quality assurance of the awards is done by the Department of Auditing, University of Pretoria.

The SAIGA awards were introduced 10 years ago to recognise the pursuit of excellence in annual reports published by provincial and national departments. The project produces 12 awards.
