The Department of Labour (DoL) initiated public hearings on the Contract Cleaning sector to review its minimum wage will enter the last phase next week.
The Contract Cleaning public hearings are part of a demonstration by the department of its commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable workers in South Africa. This has been a central pillar of the department’s work as it strives for a labour market which is conducive investment, economic growth, employment creation and with a focus on provision of decent work.
The purpose of the nationwide public hearings is to consult interested parties in the sector, especially workers on their views on the new minimum wage for the sector.
The last set of public hearings will be held on May 27 in Bloemfontein at Laboria House: Boardroom 43 Charlotter Maxeke Street and at DoL Port Elizabeth Labour Centre 116-134 Govan Mbeki Avenue. On May 28 two public hearings will be held in Bethlehem at The Royal Terrance 9 President Boshoff Street and also at DoL’s East London Labour Centre at Corner Oxford and Hill Street.
The public hearings start at 10am.
In terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the current sectoral determination (SD) governing the minimum wage and conditions of employment for the Contract Cleaning Sector, which started on 01/12/2013 and will come to an end on 30/11/2014.
The current sectoral determination prescribes a minimum hourly wage rate of R15, 69 for people employed in major metropolitan councils (eg. City of Cape Town, Tshwane, Nelson Mandela) and local councils areas such as (eg. Emfuleni, Westonaria, Metsimaholo, Stellenbosch, Mogale City); and those in the rest of South Africa the rate is R14, 21.
The wage review public hearings began on May 8 in Mpumalanga Province, the Northern Cape and the Gauteng Province.
