The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire breakout at Leratong Hospital this morning.
Indications are that the fire was caused by the oxygen cylinder at Ward 14. However all patients and staff were evacuated immediately and no one was injured.
The company which supplies the cylinder has dispatched an engineer to investigate the cause of the fire. Facts will be known once the investigation is completed.
This incident is not related to backlog in maintenance. Currently the ward is fully functional and there was no serious damage to the infrastructure.
The Department is interested in finding out what went wrong as an incident of this nature never occurred in any public hospital in the province.
