The bodies of those who passed on at Pieter Wessels old age home in Dunnottar, Nigel in Ekurhuleni after a fire broke out last night killing 18 people and injuring about 40 others have now been removed and taken to a government mortuary in Nigel.
To assist the family members of the deceased, Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has arranged transport which will take them to the mortuary to identify their loved ones. This transport will leave at 09h00 tomorrow morning from Zanele Mbeki Home in Dunnottar.
Upon hearing the news, MEC Qedani Mahlangu together with her team rushed to the scene this morning to assess the situation and offer assistance and support. She sends her condolences to the families of the deceased.
MEC Mahlangu and her team have since placed the survivors of the fire at Zanele Mbeki Home as well as Nigel old age home. Counselling services are also being offered to the survivors, their families and the families of the deceased.
The team from the department is also working with owners of the home to coordinate donations. Donations of food and clothes are urgently needed and they can be dropped off at Zanele Mbeki Home.
