Department inducts newly elected ward committees

In ensuring that newly elected ward committee members are equipped with the knowledge and understanding of relevant local government legislation and policies, the North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs is conducting a series of induction programmes to afford new ward committees an exhaustive understanding of the local government environment.

During these inductions, ward committees will be lectured on relevant and key legislations applicable in local government such as White paper on Local Government (1996), and legislations such as Municipal Structures Act (Act 117 of 1998), Municipal Demarcation Act (Act 27 of 1998), Municipal Systems Act (Act 32 of 2000) Municipal Finance Management Act (Act 56 of 2003), Municipal Property Rates Act (Act 6 of 2004), Inter-Governmental Relations Act (Act 13 of 2005) Promotion of Administrative Justice Act and Ordinance 17 of 1939.

This will enable ward committees to fulfill their developmental mandate as legislated and acclimatise themselves with various scopes of government’s programme of action.

Thus far, ward committees in four local municipalities namely Moretele, Tswaing, Ditsobotla and Kgetleng rivier local municipalities have been inducted. The remaining 19 local municipalities will be inducted in due course.
