Department of Home Affairs assists 18 419 South Africans during extended working hours on 5 February 2011

Pretoria: Eighteen thousand four hundred and nineteen (18 419) ID applicants were yesterday Saturday, 5 February 2011 assisted by the Department of Home Affairs, as part of its commitment to enable South Africans to register for the voter registration weekend 5 to 6 February, as declared by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The support to the 18 419 South Africans was part of the department’s commitment to fulfil its constitutional mandate to the IEC to enable the country’s citizenry to exercise their democratic right to vote in the forthcoming Local Government Elections.

In this context officials worked extended hours on Friday, 4 February 2011 and from 08h00 to 17h00 on 5 and 6 February. The department’s 117 mobile offices were also deployed across the country as per the directive of the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

Departmental officials processed 7 483 new ID applications and issued 1 196 temporary identity certificates (TICs) on Saturday, 5 February 2011.

The department expresses its appreciation to the 9 740 South Africans who heeded its call to collect as yet uncollected IDs. We continue to appeal to the remaining South Africans with uncollected IDs to do so as soon as possible. Your ID guarantees your democratic right to vote in addition to enabling you to access other social services provided by government.

Minister Dlamini Zuma expresses her appreciation to the Home Affairs officials who worked extended hours over the weekend and commits the department to again work to deliver quality services during the next voter registration weekend.
