Department gives feedback to district municipalities on local government assessment by ministerial task teams

The MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena has began a process of meeting with all Executive Mayors, Speakers, Chief Whips and Municipal Managers of all municipalities to give them feedback on the report of ministerial task teams that were set up to conduct an assessment of our municipalities in the province.

MEC Mokoena began by meeting the Ehlanzeni District Municipality. When presenting the report, MEC Mokoena stated that this was a draft report based on the interactive sessions the task teams held with all the different stakeholders of local government both internal and external in each of the municipalities. He also emphasised that this report has set the scene for dialogue and will also enable municipalities to get an understanding of what perceptions their communities have of them and what they expect of them.

The municipalities have been given a period of seven days to study the report, present it to council and then give its inputs to the province for the final consolidation of the report. Once these inputs have been received and consolidated the province will then hold a Municipal Lekgotla on 22 October 2009, where all municipalities in the province will converge to finalise the provincial report on the assessments.

This will then culminate in a local government summit to be held in November 2009. Today, 30 September 2009, the MEC will meet with all municipalities from the Gert Sibande District which will be followed by Nkangala on Thursday, 1 October 2009.
