The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform will this afternoon (Thursday, 28 July 2011) start distributing livestock feed to the communities affected by the recent snow in the Chris Hani, OR Tambo and Joe Gqabi District municipal areas.
As a temporary and urgent measure, the departmental took a decision to help the small-scale and communal farmers that are in immediate need of livestock feed.
Upon hearing about the disaster that has claimed many lives of livestock; the department’s disaster team comprised of extension officials and veterinary services officials was dispatched to team up with other departments and municipal officials to access the extent of the situation.
The team of animal technicians dispatched in the affected villages has already started with administering required vaccinations to animals that need medical attention.
The department has a duty of responding to disasters like these and it is the vision of the department to help the poor farming communities to reach their goal.
The Honourable MEC Zoleka Capa has expressed the department’s commitment to rescue the situation and farmers are urged to use both departmental and municipal offices to report their cases.
The heart of the MEC sympathises with the farmers that have lost livestock and the communities that are affected by the snow.
