Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs looking into Emalahleni water problems

The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena, has noted with great concern the service delivery challenges, particularly the intermittent water supply that has continued to plague the Emalahleni Local Municipality. MEC Mokoena says the department’s immediate concern is to ensure that the water supply and quality is improved.

MEC Mokoena has appointed a task team to collate information regarding the disruption of water services in the municipality. The team will also look at all infrastructure challenges and compile a technical report and recommendations.

MEC will study the outcome of the report and ensure that the municipality assisted by the district municipality, provincial government and the Department of Water fully implements the recommendations. He has also appealed to residents to cooperate with municipality. “We understand that the residents have been hugely affected by the problems of the municipality, but we appeal to them to be patient as we try to find a lasting solution to these problems. The matter of basic service delivery including water and institutional support are receiving urgent attention and we urge the residents to continue paying for their services,” said Mokoena.

The task started its work on Monday, 11 October 2010 and is expected to complete its work within a week.
