Department condemns violence at Mkhondo Local Municipality

The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Norman Mokoena has condemned in the strongest possible terms the unwarranted violence, malicious destruction of property, disrespect of the rule of law and the violation of the rights of law abiding citizens by certain residents of Mkhondo municipality who paraded as protesters. He said that it was very disturbing that when the people of an area call upon government to come and meet them and it does, then after the meeting people resort to such unbecoming behaviour.

He stated that while we respect the individual’s right to protest however such protests should be within the ambit of the law. He added that government will continue to engage in the public participation processes with the community but this must be within the law.

“This government has got an open door policy and at all times we will engage in dialogue with our people to ensure that we solve all problems. On Sunday as government we met with the community of Mkhondo and outlined our processes of addressing the problems in the area. It therefore raises the question, why engage in acts of violence when the government you have chosen is willing to meet with you” said Mokoena

The department will be appointing a team of investigators to go and investigate all the allegations made against the municipality. “We appeal to all residents who may have proof or information that can assist in this regard to come forward and provide this information to the investigators. We also call upon the community to make use of governments anti-corruption toll free number 0800 701 701 to report any acts of corruption or provide any further information on the allegations made against the municipality. Their identity will be protected” said Mokoena.

Government will not tolerate any criminal elements that threaten the destruction of the democratic institutions of government, vandalise public property, threaten people’s lives and destroy their property.

MEC Mokoena has also appealed for restraint and calm from all the people of Mkhondo. “The government remains committed to the resolution of issues raised by the community of Mkhondo. We also encourage the community leaders and the community to engage in dialogue to resolve any dispute. As the democratic government chosen by the people we are open to dialogue “said Mokoena

Every possible step will be taken to investigate, apprehend and ensure that the perpetrators of violence and intimidation are brought to book and face the full might of the law.
