The Gauteng Department of Health has strongly condemned the conduct of nurse who allowed a pregnant patient to give birth on the street outside Soshanguve Community Health Centre.
Initial investigation has revealed that the incident happened on Thursday last week. The investigation centres on three nurses who attended to the patient when she arrived at the centre to give birth.
Statements have been taken from the nurses, the patient and witnesses. A full report is expected this week.
The department wishes to apologise to the patient, her family, other patients who witnessed the incident and the community in general.
“As a department we share the public outrage over this incident. We would like to assure the community that we do not condone the behaviour displayed by the nursing professionals who attended to this patient. It goes against the patient rights charter and the oath that nurse taken upon joining the profession.
“The matter will be investigated to the fullest and disciplinary action will be taken against those who have implicated. The department will also report the matter to the South African Nursing Profession Council for them to take the necessary remedial action,” Simon Zwane said.
