Department of Communications marks International Women's Day

On International Women's Day the Minister of Communications Ms Dina Pule would like to acknowledge the role that Information Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has played in improving the lives of women in South Africa.

With the mobile penetration rate exceeding 100% more women have access to technology than ever before. Mobile technology is improving the lives of women in the health sector by providing feedback on ARV use. In the education field ICT has increased access to education through revolutionising teaching methods, making education portable, and facilitating distance learning. ICTs have also enabled women to become safer.

Violence against women has reached unacceptable levels in our society. ICTs provide women with an opportunity to protect themselves. Mobile phones and social networks allow women to quickly get assistance, provide support structures and share information on crime as well as their experiences and to document threats and other wrongful acts.

Our government has passed the Protection from Harassment Act 11 of 2010 which ensures that women are able to take action against those who use electronic communication to harass them. The Department of Communications is currently establishing a Cyber Security Centre to further protect women, amongst others, from online predators.

The ICT sector also offers a myriad of opportunities to women. Minister Pule urged women to seize opportunities in this sector. “The ICT sector provides women with a rewarding career in a fast-paced environment. We are urging young women especially to take advantage of our e-skills programmes to prepare themselves for an exciting career in ICT.” The department is promoting numerous initiatives and will host the ‘Girls in ICT’ Day on 25 April.
