Department celebrate Mandela Day in style

18 July marked the 91st birthday celebrations for the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. Part of marking the occasion MEC for Health and Social Development Qedani Mahlangu and Premier Nomvula Mokonyane embarked on various activities that included amongst others planting trees, painting of hospital wards and general cleaning.

Distinguished guests who included former Zambian President Dr Kenneth Kaunda partook in cleaning activities at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on 18 July 2009. Representatives from other African continents such as the neighbouring Swaziland and Tanzania were also present. Dr Kaunda, clad in an overall, joined hundreds of volunteers and other African elders in dedicating their 67 minutes, doing community work. The day's activities incorporated general cleaning around the health facility.

As part of the build up to the commemoration, our soccer team, who are the 2009 champions of Gauteng Public Service Week tournament and their netball team added their fair share by helping with the filing and painting at the hospital a day before the momentous occasion.
