Deliver quality houses or face termination of contracts and blacklisting contractors warned

The North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison has warned  housing developers and contractors that it will not hesitate to terminate their contracts and even blacklist them should they fail to deliver on time and continue to render shoddy work.

This stern warning was issued by Head of Department for the Human Settlement branch of the provincial department, Thupi Mokhatla on conclusion of the last district technical engagement and assessment of housing development projects held in Rustenburg on Thursday. In his closing remarks ending the two weeks long sessions, Mokhatla said that the days where the department used to move around rectifying mistakes as a result of poor workmanship are over.

He expressed confidence that the province wise engagements that his department had engaged in over the past two weeks were invaluable and provided insight into challenges in the process and programmes to deliver quality and habitable houses in the province.

Mokhatla says that since the beginning of the engagements, contractors have agreed and showed more determination to deliver as required. Although some of the emerging contractors have cited challenges, they have committed to improve communication with the department and further cooperate with the technical team established to monitor and evaluate projects from inception until hand over.

Agreements on fast tracking of housing delivery without compromising on quality were reached with municipalities and housing developers across the province. The engagements which started two weeks ago were aimed at improving relations with municipalities on ways in which housing delivery could be improved and to eliminate the blocked projects phenomenon.
