Defence on fatal military car accident

A member of the South African National Defence force killed in a car accident

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms a fatal military car accident that happened on Friday, 06 October 2017 at approximately 15h00. The military vehicle was ferrying four (4) members of the SANDF when the accident happened on the road between Bethlehem and Tweeleng in the Free State.

They were en route from Bethlehem to Pretoria at the time of the accident. One (1) member died and three (3) were rushed to Dihlabeng Hospital in Bethlehem. After receiving medical assistance, two (2) members were discharged from hospital and one (1) remains hospitalised in a critical but stable condition.

The name of the deceased will be released once the next-of-kin have been formally informed.

A Board of Inquiry will be instituted to determine the cause(s) of the accident.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Hon Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, the Secretary for Defence, Dr Sam Gulube and the Chief of the SANDF, General Solly Shoke express their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased member and wishes a full recovery to the hospitalised member.
