Defence deploys soldiers in Mothutlung to help distribute water

South African National Defence Force lends a hand to the Mothutlung Community

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be assisting with the provision of water in Mothutlung near Brits in the North West province in support of the National Disaster Management Team.

The SANDF will deploy a contingent of soldiers to the Brits area on Thursday, 16 January 2014 to assist the Department of Water Affairs in an effort to elevate the current water situation in the Brits area. The first elements of fourteen (14) water bunkers with a protection element, escorted by Military Police will reach the affected areas today.

The main aim of this deployment is to render humanitarian assistance to the affected townships near Brits in the North West province. The deployment will be under the command of the Joint Operations Headquarters and will be executed from a temporary operational base in Brits.

The deployment will once again show the versatility of the SANDF to deploy internally as a humanitarian force and to assist the people of South Africa.

The assistance of SANDF was requested by the Department of Water Affairs and the operation will be executed within the ambit of Operation Chariot, as support to the government and the operation will continue until the local municipality repairs the water supply to the affected areas.

This is in line with the SANDF’s support to government and other state institutions in times of need.
