The Independent Complaints Directorate (IDP) received a notification of death of a person in custody from South African Police Service (SAPS) Westonaria on Tuesday, 5 May 2011 around midnight. An investigator was immediately sent to the scene where he found a 19 year old man hanging in the cells. The deceased was identified as Frederick Olivier who was earlier detained for drunkenness. It is alleged that the deceased committed suicide.
No visible injuries were found on deceased. Post mortem results revealed that the death was consistent with hanging. The ICD does not suspect foul play on the part of the police at this stage.
