It is alleged that on 15 February 2010 at 22h30 members from Nyanga were pursuing a bakkie which was wanted for a Bishop Lavis case. The members allege that there were three occupants in the bakkie and that there were shots fired at them.
Four members returned fire with a total of 51.9 millimetre rounds having been fired at the bakkie. The bakkie came to a stop against a pavement outside the Shell garage. One of the suspects in the bakkie allegedly fled from the scene. The driver was declared dead at the scene. The third suspect was shot in the leg.
With the assistance of Local Criminal Record Centre LCRC) and Ballistics, 38 fired cartridge cases were recovered on the scene. A projectile and shrapnel were also found inside the bakkie. A firearm was also recovered on the floor (driver’s side) of the bakkie with nine rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber.
An inquest docket has been opened and is being investigated by Nyanga CID whilst the ICD conducts a preliminary investigation. It will be important to establish if any of the fired cartridge cases can be linked to the firearm recovered in the bakkie and the outcome of the post mortem. The post mortem will be conducted on 17 February 2010 at Salt River.
