The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, has extended the Land Tenure Security Bill consultations period. The original deadline was 22 February and the new closing date is now 18 March 2011.
The minister accepted the request for the extension of the consultation period following requests he received from various stakeholders such as the non-governmental organisations (NGOs), farmer organisations, and the general public. The extension of these consultations is to ensure as many stakeholders as possible are afforded an opportunity to input into this very important bill.
The objectives of the Land Tenure Security Bill, which was gazetted on 24 December 2010, are as follows:
- to promote and protect the relative rights of persons working on farms, persons residing on farms and farm owners
- to enhance the security of tenure of persons residing on farms
- to create conditions conducive to peaceful and harmonious relationships on farms and in farming communities
- to sustain production discipline on land in the interest of food security.
Several provinces have undertaken the consultations process already following the gazetting of the bill in December and the extension will provide an additional opportunity for more consultations as well as for stakeholders who will still like to submit their comments to do so.
