Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga, visited the Limpopo province to review progress in terms of outstanding matters under section 100 (1) b to fast-track the delivery of the 10 non-negotiables to radically transform the basic education sector.
Minister Motshekga, accompanied by Department of Basic Education (DBE) senior officials, visited the Limpopo Department of Education (LDoE) from 25-26 September 2014. According to the LDoE progress report, there were many areas of functionality that have been improved on since 2012. These include, amongst others, school infrastructure, Learner Teacher Support Material (LTSM), budget management and teacher recruitment.
The Limpopo Administrator, Mr Mzwandile Matthews, said that the provision of stationery and textbooks have to be the centre of focus of LTSM in the Limpopo province. Matthews further mentioned that the department will work very hard to ensure that all the necessary resources are delivered to all schools.
Minister Motshekga said that the department has to ensure that radical transformation prevails in the education sector and added that, while focusing on the key priority programmes, it is also essential to support the Kha Ri Gude project. Minister Motshekga told the MEC, Mrs Thembisile Nwedamutswu, that she will be visiting Kha Ri Gude sites in all nine provinces this year to ensure that all South African adults are being skilled in literacy and numeracy.
The MEC said that, although progress has been made in the sector, a lot of work still needs to be done to improve quality learning and teaching in schools. During this visit, the Minister interacted with more than 906 primary school principals in the Capricorn District.
