Dam levels update

The Department of Water Affairs has reduced the number of flood gates opened at the Vaal Dam from 17 to 14 over the past 24 hours. The Vaal dam is currently at 104% full, with the 14 gates currently open the outflow is 1800m3/s (Cubic meters per second) and the dam should be back to 100% on 2011/01/11.

Adjustments have also been made at the other three major dams in the Vaal and Orange River catchment. The Bloemhof Dam is at 94% full, the outflow is 2800m3/s (cubic meters per second). At the same time, the Gariep Dam stands at 118% (peak was 119%), the inflow is 2000m3/s and the outflow is 2500m3/s

The Vanderkloof Dam has reached a capacity of 113% the inflow is 2600m3/s and the outflow of 2400m3/s. The flood warning issued by the Department of Water Affairs earlier, for communities residing downstream of the Vaal Dam and the other three major dams to take care, remains in place. Water levels are still dangerously high.
