DAFF’s response to fire incidents in the Free State

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries regrettably confirms fire incidents that resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods in different parts of the Free State.  The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Senzeni Zokwana, is saddened by the loss of lives and properties that the farming community suffered due to these fire incidents.

“To all families who have lost their loved ones, farmers and farm workers who have lost livelihoods and livestock, sustained injuries, lost houses and other infrastructure, we express our deepest condolences and sympathy”, said Minister Zokwana.  “We will continue to do all in our power to minimise further loss of life and damage to property and infrastructure. We will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and coherent approach in assisting those affected”, he said.

Processes are underway to assess the fire impact in order to facilitate the provision of emergency relief and interventions.  The Minister will be travelling to Harrismith to assess the situation and to consult with relevant authorities.  The department wishes to thank brave firefighters who continue to work tirelessly to contain wildfires in the province and other parts of the country.  Furthermore, the department advises that the agricultural sector is particularly vulnerable to the impact of extreme climate and weather variability.

The department believes that matters pertaining to sustainable management of agricultural natural resources and reduction of risk of natural hazards require priority consideration to enable the country to continuously improve on its early warning systems.  Members of the public are advised to refrain from activities that could lead to the occurrence and spread of veld fires.
