CRL Rights Commission Commemorates South African National Women’s Day under the Theme "56 years of women united against poverty, inequality and unemployment"

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (hereinafter CRL Rights Commission) will be joining the rest of the South African communities in observing the 56th anniversary of the South African women's anti pass protest and march to the Union Building on the 9th of August 1956.

The CRL Rights Commission would like to remind all Cultural, Religious and Language communities that women in South Africa played a prominent role in the struggle for equal rights long before any formal women’s organizations came into being, as early as 1912 and in 1913, Black and Coloured women in the Free State protested against having to carry identity passes, which White women were not required to do.

The CRL Rights Commission further congratulates Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, on her election as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the 15th of July 2012 and hope that she will address the conflicts facing the African Continent on issues of religion and culture by using the CRL Rights Commission unique model of restorative justice, tolerance, respect and reconciliation.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the CRL Rights Commission, Advocate Pheagane Solomon Moreroa, “9th of August 1956 marks an important national holiday in South African wherein the rights and freedoms of all women are recognised and protected by the Constitution of the new South Africa but as the theme reminds us of triple challenges facing women such as inequality, poverty and unemployment and the CRL Rights Commission is concerned with plight of rural and urban unemployed women in the sector of Arts, Culture, Religion and Language”
