The only people who should live in fear in our communities are criminals who should always be on the run because their days are numbered. This assertion was made by North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono during the provincial celebration of the National Police Day held at the Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng on Friday.
In her keynote address delivered at the event, MEC Mohono said the message that should be sent by the South African Police Service to criminals on the celebration of the National Police day is that, the service is smart, united and disciplined force that will not allow them to claim any inch of space in any community in the country. She said that every South African has every right to feel secured in their homes or everywhere they are.
More than three thousand police officers, led by the provincial Commissioner lieutenant general Mbombo, descended to Mafikeng on Friday morning to celebrate the anniversary for the establishment of the South African Police Service and successes that it has scored in its quest to protect and serve communities.
Speakers addressing the celebrations, preached messages of support for the police service and further praised them for the selfless service and dedicated service. The day was celebrated nationally under theme Squeezing crime to zero, through Human Capital investments.
North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Zukiswa Mbombo, praised the police for the hard work and dedication they have displayed in the previous years.
According to Commissioner Mbombo, the success of all operations conducted in the past few months bear testimony to the success and the reduction of crime in the North West. She called on police officers and police management to intensify the fight against crime, to make the streets of the North West safer.
The day was celebrated with festivities, armed robbery and hostage rescue simulations by the tactical response unit and a soccer match between Bakwena Platinum Stars and the Provincial Police Soccer team.
Entertainment by Mmabana Dancers, medals and trophies were sponsored by the Provincial Department of Sports, Arts & Culture.
Meanwhile, Constables Tshabello Tlali and Mahlomola Mbele received a special award for being the best police officers in the province during the SAPS Excellence Awards held on Thursday night.
The two members of the Klerksdorp Tactical Response Team are said to be inseparable and have taken part in most the successful operations, and other major cases which were resolved successfully within the province.
Potchefstroom Police Station received the overall award for being the best police station in the province.
