Crack detectives' team to investigate violence that claimed eye of National Union of Mineworkers deputy president

North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa says that a crack team of detectives has been assembled to investigate the violence attack and stoning of the leadership of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) at Impala North Mine, hostel number six yesterday.

MEC Yawa accompanied by senior police management visited the Deputy President of NUM, Peter Matosa on Friday morning at Fern Crest Hospital in Rustenburg where he had undergone an operation to remove his left eye following the incident.

It is alleged that stones were thrown at a delegation of the NUM national executive committee led by Matosa and the regional leadership as they left a wage negotiations briefing mass meeting that sought to convince the mineworkers affiliated to the union to accept the 10 percent wage offer from Anglo Platinum.

"There is no justification for violence that occurred during and after the mass meeting. The police will come hard on those responsible for this heinous crime," says MEC Yawa.

Workers at the mine have been on strike for the past two weeks demanding a 14 percentage wage increase.
