A joint operation between members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African Revenue Service’s (SARS) Customs Unit led to the arrest of a Zimbabwean couple who allegedly attempted to smuggle in R6 million worth of gold bricks through Musina’s Beit Bridge border post on Friday afternoon.
A dog handler from SARS was doing his routine inspection when he spotted a suspicious looking black Audi sedan with a Zimbabwean registration number. The inspector requested to search the vehicle and found a parcel wrapped with a black plastic bag which was hidden inside the arm rest compartment of the passenger seat. He immediately informed the police who then found out that inside the plastic was six bricks of gold, with an estimated value of R6 million.
The occupants of the vehicle, a 39-year-old driver and his wife, 37, were arrested on the spot and will appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of unlawful possession of precious metal. Further investigations are afoot to determine whether they can be linked to similar cases.
