Water tanks and buckets were provided at Grootvlei correctional centres last night to meet the minimum water requirements of offenders, following the bursting of the main water supply to the centres.
The water shortage has caused a limited impact on the normal functioning of all correctional centres in Grootvlei Management Area and the problem is being attended to. The management of Grootvlei briefed offenders and appealed for their understanding and patience during this period.
Currently the centres accommodate over 2200 inmates and the amount of water supplied can only be used for basic hygiene, food preparation, drinking, taking medication and for remand detainees that have to appear in court until the situation is rectified.
The Department of Public Works is on site, assessing the damage and facilitating the repair of the burst pipe. The Fire Department of Mangaung Municipality is also assisting by providing water tanks for the duration of the repair period.
