Correctional Services on parole of Waterkloof four

Waterkloof four is part of 64 inmates placed on parole daily in South Africa

Today, 11 February 2014, the "Waterkloof Four" were placed on Parole after signing and receiving a brief orientation on their parole conditions at the Pretoria Community Corrections Office at the Poyntons Building. Their placement is part of about 64 offenders that get placed on Parole on a daily basis in Correctional Services.

The four youths were sentenced to 12 years in custody for murdering a homeless person in Waterkloof and they benefited from the President's Special Remission of Sentence of six months. They were considered by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards of Zonderwater and Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centres and granted parole as they completed half of the sentences as a requirement by the Correctional Services Act.

Their parole took effect on 11 February 2014. The four are Frederick Tiedt and Gert van Schalkwyk who were in Zonderwater and Christopher Becker and Friekie Du Preez who were in Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.

They have been given strict parole conditions that include regular reporting to the Kgosi Mampuru Community Corrections Office in Pretoria and their sentences will expire in 2019. These four are part of about 24 000 offenders that are granted parole on an annual basis by our 53 Correctional Supervision and Parole Boards across the country. Parole placement is, internationally, one of a series of tools used by prison and correctional systems to manage inmate populations.
