Correctional Services Minister Mapisa-Nqakula launches a name change campaign

Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has announced a name change process for some correctional centres nationally in an advertising campaign starting on 23 January 2011.

Eleven correctional centres have been identified for renaming as part of recognising their place and role in shaping the history of South Africa, the Minister said. These correctional centres are Johannesburg, Pretoria Central and Leeuwkop in Gauteng; Barberton and Modimolle in the Limpopo/Mpumalanga/North West region; St Albans and East London in the Eastern Cape; Pollsmoor in Western Cape; Kroonstad in the Free State/Northern Cape region; as well as Durban Westville and Pietermaritzburg correctional centres in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Minister Mapisa-Nqakula the renaming will recognise key events, geographic significance and personalities associated with these facilities. The minister established a task team led by Chief Deputy Commissioner Zach Modise that will hold consultative meetings in the affected areas. Members of the public, stakeholders and all interested parties are requested to submit suggestions and motivations of not more than 500 words for consideration.

All submission must be made to Mr Zach Modise on or before 4 February 2011 by post, email or fax as outlined hereunder:
Address: CDC Corrections, Private Bag X136, Pretoria, 0001 or
Email: submit@dcs.gov.za
Fax: 012 328 8326 / 086 569 1482

The new names will be announced on 21 March 2011 as part of a programme aimed at celebrating Human Rights Day. The minister appealed to all communities and stakeholders to join hands in accelerating the transformation of the Department of Correctional Services and in helping to break the cycle of crime.
