A manhunt is underway for Andries Gamba Msimang (29) who escaped from Tembisa public hospital yesterday. He was taken to hospital on 26 April 2011 for observation and was later admitted after he suffered a stroke. He is serving a life sentence for murder, robbery, rape and house breaking with intent to rob and kidnap.
He is originally from Mozambique and was sentenced on 2 September 2009. The Department of Correctional Services has begun its internal investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident. The matter has also been reported to the South African Police Services to conduct their own investigations and to bring the offender back behind bars.
The Acting Regional Commissioner of Gauteng Ms Mmule Motsamai – Madisa has ordered an immediate investigation to establish full details on the escape and appealed to members of the public to help in bringing this dangerous offender back into custody.
The Department of Correctional Services takes any escape very seriously and has already served the two officials responsible for guarding the offender with letters of intent to suspend them. The officials may face charges of gross negligence and dereliction of responsibility.
Members of the public are advised not to attempt to arrest this dangerous escapee, but to contact 10111 or inform any nearest police station.
To help the public to assist in bringing this escapee back behind bars, Correctional Services is also publishing his photograph (attached).
