A three month investigation by Correctional Services’ Departmental Investigating Unit (DIU) of bribery soliciting allegations has led to an arrest of a correctional official of the Vereeniging Correctional Centre today – 24 February 2011.

Following a tip-off by a service provider that allegedly fell prey to the procurement official that solicited bribes, the DIU started an investigation that culminated in the arrest of the said official by the South African Police Services today. The name of the official is withheld at this stage, until she appears in court tomorrow, 25 February 2011, when she is expected to face charges of fraud and corruption. She has also been placed on suspension pending finalisation of investigations and disciplinary process.

Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services Ms. Nontsikelelo Jolingana welcomed the arrest as “further evidence of the Department’s zero tolerance of fraud, corruption and serious maladministration that netted us the third top spot among 85 government institutions with effective minimum anti-corruption capacity nationally.”“We are encouraged by these successes and believe they should send a clear signal to would be culprits that there is no room for fraudsters and corrupt officials in Correctional Services”, said Ms Jolingana.
