The “Each One settle One campaign” was launched at Bolivia Lodge at 08h30 this morning to mark the provincial roll-out.
Speaking at a media breakfast session, the Department of Corporative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, “Government has delivered 3 million housing units since 1994, yet housing shortage is still a major challenge because government has very limited resources and these resources cannot reduce the current housing backlog. This is why our overall approach to the housing challenge is aimed at mobilising and harnessing the combined resources, efforts and initiative of communities, the private and commercial sector and the state” said Lekganyane.
The campaign which is aimed at mobilising South Africans from big listed, non-listed organisations and private citizens, to actively get involved in reducing the current 176, 647 housing backlog, was initially launched by the Human Settlements Minister, Mr Tokyo Sexwale, in October this year.
Human Settlements is not just about building houses, it is about transforming our cities and towns and about building cohesive, sustainable and caring communities with closer access to work and social amenities. Thousands of jobs will be created; skills will be transferred and developed; and the quality of people’s lives will be improved through the campaign.
The MEC also encouraged contributions in the form of land, building material, finance, services and other expertise.
