Cop sentenced to 10 years behind bars for murder

The Esikhawini South African Police Service (SAPS) Inspector, Shadrack Mhlongo has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for murder. Mhlongo shot and killed his wife, Zakhona Mthethwa on 7 June 2008.

SAPS reported the matter to the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD). ICD took over the case from SAPS on recommendation by the Esikhawini Regional Court and immediately instituted a full scale investigation into the matter. The investigation was finalised on 31 October 2008 where after the matter was taken to court for a trial.

ICD also made recommendations to the station commissioner to lodge a departmental enquiry against the accused member. SAPS internal enquiry found Mhlongo guilty of having violated SAPS standing orders and was duly dismissed from the service.

The criminal case was finalised on 28 July 2009 and Mhlongo was found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. This conviction further reaffirms ICD's commitment and uncompromising stance to the elimination of unlawful elements within the police ranks.
