Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs on reports of thunderstorms that have caused major disaster in the province

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre has received reports of thunderstorms that have caused major disaster in the province. Preliminary report shows that about 100 households in Mamehlabe, Rosenkrantz and Pinikie Sebotse villages in Matlala (Ward 2 of Aganang Local Municipality) were affected by yesterday’s thunderstorms with Mamehlabe badly affected. Houses had their roofs blown off and some are completely destroyed.

The provincial Disaster Management team is in full force to ensure that necessary support to the affected families is given, blankets and tents (for temporary) have been distributed so far. South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is ready to provide food parcels upon verification of numbers.

On the other hand, Eskom is also on site to restore electricity in the affected villages, with the assistance of South African Police Services who are cordoning areas where electrical wires are exposed. Aganang Municipality, Capricorn District Municipality and Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) are continuing with the assessment of the damage.

During this summer, parts of Limpopo will likely experience above average rains and storms. The MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr Soviet Lekganyane, as the political head of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, calls upon all the people of Limpopo, to be vigilant and take extra caution. The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is ready to handle any eventuality.
