The Department of Labour (DoL) is to hold a high-level series of public hearings on the Contract Cleaning sector. The purpose of the nationwide public hearings is to consult interested parties on the review of the minimum wage(s) for the sector.
The hearings will begin simultaneously on May 8 in Mpumalanga province, the Northern Cape and Gauteng province. In Mpumalanga the public hearing will be held DoL offices’ boardroom at Standard Bank building at 29 Brown Street in Nelspruit. In the Northern Cape it will be held at Savoy Hotel 19 Old De Beers Road. The Gauteng hearing will be held at DoL’s main boardroom at 3rd floor of 77 De Korte Street Braamfontein.
All national public hearings, which will culminate on May 28 in Free State and Eastern Cape provinces, will start at 10am.
“Contract cleaning Sector” is described as the sector in which employers and employees are associated for the purpose of cleaning or washing by hand or machine, of furniture, windows, carpets, doors, floors, tools, machinery, under supervision at industrial and commercial premises, buildings, and flats that are let commercially or any airplanes, trucks, cars, buses, trains or any other vehicle requiring to be cleaned.
In terms of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the current sectoral determination (SD) which governs the minimum wage and conditions of employment for the Contract Cleaning Sector, started on 1 December 2013 and will run until 30 November 2014.
The current sectoral determination prescribes a minimum hourly wage rate of R15,69 for people employed in major metropolitan councils (eg. City of Cape Town, Tshwane, Nelson Mandela) and local councils areas (eg. Emfuleni, Westonaria, Metsimaholo, Stellenbosch, Mogale City); and those in the rest of South Africa the rate is R14,21.
