Contract cleaning and roads, transport and freights sectors under scrutiny

The Department of Labour’s robust inspectors will focus their attention on contract cleaning as well as roads, transport and freights industries this week.

While the week- long spotlight on contract cleaning will be on compliance with its sectoral determination, the focus on the Transport and Freights sector will be on the Labour Relations Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act for those employees not covered by the sector’s Bargaining Council.

The Occupational Health and Safety and Employment Equity Acts will also be high on agenda during the inspector’s scrutiny to check whether employers do not prioritise their profits before the well being of their workers.

Besides enforcing labour laws, the department also promotes sound labour relations and provides information and advice on labour laws respectively and therefore these inspections are beneficial to employers rather than being viewed as a ‘witch hunting process’ as most employers think.

"We encourage employers to comply voluntarily rather than being pressured, but if they are unwilling to do so, we will have to force them through the issuing of Compliance orders and other enforcement mechanisms," said Chief Director for Provincial Operations, Marsha Bronkhorst.
