The Portfolio Committee on Public Service and Administration, Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation has committed itself to a continuous robust engagement with the Public Service Commission to ensure that the body delivers on its constitutional mandate.
During a meeting today to scrutinise the Commission’s 2014/’15 Annual Performance Plan and budget, the Committee noted the need for an improved close working relationship with the Commission to ensure an effective public service.
The Committee is convinced that the PSC is an important tool in enhancing oversight over the Executive to ensure that the public service delivers effective and efficient services as promised by the President during the State of the Nation.
“We believe that moving forward, we need to engage the Commission as a means of strengthening the oversight role that both the Committee and the Commission play,” said Committee Chairperson Mrs Peace Mabe. This close working relationship will also assist in allaying fears that the Commission might have on the enforcement of the directives it issues to government departments.
The people of this country depend on institutions like Parliament and the Commission to keep an eye on the Executive.
“It is within this context that the Committee recognises this need for engagement between the C omission and the Portfolio Committee. It is only through this working relationship that oversight will be strengthened. The Committee will further look into the finalisation of the Public Service Amendment Bill to give further impetus to the Commission on the delivery of its mandate,” said Mrs Mabe.
To this end, the Committee has committed to finding a date, as soon as possible, to meet the Commission as the first step to concretising this working relationship.
