Just when dust is settling down after the department and the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Policy Conference on Inspections, the determined and tough inspectors are now focusing their attention on the construction sector throughout the country from Monday.
"Whilst many employers in this sector may see our inspections as 'witch hunt', the truth is that we want to assist them in making sure that workers are safe at their workplaces and all labour laws are complied with," said Page Boikanyo, departmental spokesperson.
The focus of the inspections will be compliance with Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Unemployment Insurance Fund Act (UIFA), Employment Equity Act (EEA) and many more acts covering the sector.
"Labour legislation is for the benefit of both employers and employees, therefore compliance is a must for employers. That is why we have competent and capable personnel at Labour centres to assist them in complying. If they do not comply voluntarily, we will resort to the law," Boikanyo said.
