Congratutory message by Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe, at the inauguration of Dr Khotso Mokhele as Chancellor of the University of the Free State

The Free State community welcomes the appointment of Dr Khotso Mokhele as Chancellor. He matriculated in this province at Moroka High School in 1973 and returns as the seventh Chancellor of this University. He brings with him an understanding of the academic culture, exceptional scientific and research expertise and proven experience in the private sector.

The endorsement of Dr Mokhele by the Council of the University of the Free State occurs at a time that is rife with challenges and ripe with opportunities.

We are ready to work with you and the leadership of the University of the Free State, in tackling the issues facing higher education. Working together we can explore new ways to advance the goals of access, equity and success.

Together with the University of the Free State’s Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning: Natural and Sciences Faculty we are collaborating in the ‘160 Grade 9 Enrichment Programme’ which seeks to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics, science and technology in the province.

Through such joint activities we need to create a conducive environment where all students, blacks and whites feel welcomed and accommodated in all aspects of university life. Universities need to create a culturally and intellectually enriching experience for all participants in the sector.

Afrikaans is not at risk as a medium of teaching and learning at the institutions of higher learning. Government has consistently argued that all official languages in this country including Afrikaans should enjoy equal status as enshrined in the Constitution.

Commendably, our language policy for higher education recognises Afrikaans as a language of scholarship and research and states very clearly that the language should be treated as a national asset. The policy, frowns on the use of Afrikaans as a barrier to access by non-speakers of the language.

The Free State Department of Education and the entire provincial government welcome the contribution you will make on issues that will help the province deliver quality education for all.
