Conference deliberations begin in earnest

The 17th World Festival of Youth and Students begins in earnest today as delegates formally get down to business with their deliberations at the Tshwane Events Centre.

President Jacob Zuma officially opened the Festival at the Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, yesterday where more than 6 000 people attended.

Countries represented include Canada, Italy, Algeria, Sudan, Haiti as well as lone representatives such as The Netherlands.

The focus now turns to formal discussions, with a range of topics such as the right of housing for all, equality between man and woman, peace in the horn of Africa and Solidarity with Western Sahara being on the table. Each day of the conference will focus on pre-determined themes, with Tuesday 14th December dedicated to the continent of Africa.

Prominent speakers are expected to address the seminars on “The struggle for self-determination, independence and sovereignty”, as well as on the struggle for peace, sovereignty and solidarity, against imperialism.

Other topics to be discussed include “Peace in the horn of Africa”, The struggle against imperialism in Sudan as well as “free Botswana from imperialist military bases”.

The delegates are also expected to take part in the Indigenous Games, which will form part of the Cultural Programme starting at 6pm each day.

Speaking at the opening ceremony President Zuma said, “Young people should be provided the space to contribute to the economic, social and cultural development in their countries.”

The United Nations also emphasises the necessity of disseminating the ideals of peace, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, peace and solidarity and dedication to the objectives of progress and development among young people.

Therefore this event is most welcome in our shores because of its enormous significance,” President Jacob Zuma concluded.
