President Jacob Zuma has expressed condolences on behalf of government on the tragic passing on of 17 elderly people at the Pieter Wessels retirement home in Nigel on the East Rand, Johannesburg.
One more person from the same home reportedly died later of a heart attack.
"While the cause of the fire that led to misfortune is still unknown, it is a distinct possibility that the age and vulnerability of the older persons made them fall victim to this tragic incident.
"The pain caused to families, relatives and staff is no doubt immeasurable. We share the loss and pain, and government will do everything in its power to assist. We thank all who are currently providing support to the residents of the home as they battle to deal with the trauma and to rebuild their lives.
"The investigation on the cause of the fire should be expedited, and lessons from the incident should be used to improve care and support to older persons in our retirement homes", President Zuma said.
We appeal to the community to continue to provide the remaining members of the retirement home support in the spirit of Ubuntu.
