The Committee on International Relations and Cooperation has called for urgent tightening of security at South African missions abroad. The Chairperson of the Committee, Mr Siphosezwe Masango, said the Department of International Relations and Cooperation should attend to issues of security at SA missions abroad both from the perspective of personnel and operational equipment.
“Ambassadors are South Africa’s image to the world and all should be provided with the kind of support that guarantees security to our national interest,” he said.
The Committee’s call was followed by a commitment by SA ambassadors to be security conscious and aware of potential threats in their various areas of accreditation.
Parliament’s Portfolio and Select Committees on International Relations and Cooperation are attending the Heads of Missions Conference in Pretoria where all South Africa’s ambassadors are gathered to reflect on the commitments of the Fifth Administration, as stated in the 2014 June State of the Nation Address (SONA).
The conference ends on Friday.
