One company was closed down for Non-Compliance with Occupational Health and safety Act (OHSA) and 24 other businesses were slapped with written warnings for contravening the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, including underpaying workers at Amalgam industria, Production and Industrial Rd in Johannesburg today.
The tight joint-inspection aimed at clamping down on non-compliance of Labour Laws and illegal business operations was carried out by the Gauteng Department of Labour accompanied by the police, immigration officials, traffic cops, and South African Revenue Services (SARS). The team cracked down on companies at Johannesburg industrial site, resulting in the arrest of 24 illegal migrants.
Gauteng Department of Labour Spokesperson, Meshack Magakwe said the notices of non-compliance that were issued out today will be followed up on and the department will continue to enforce Labour legislation.
Employees were working without any contracts, pay slips or attendance registers, and were being underpaid.
"Some of the employees were not registered with the UIF and the compensation fund while the Occupational Health and Safety Act was found to be non-existent." Magakwe said employers were given 21 days to correct matters.
"They were issued with written undertakings to comply with or risk being dragged to court." More joint inspections with SAPS, Home Affairs, SARS and Metro Police in the province were imminent
